Flowers for Algernon

It’s been just over 8 months since I moved to Japan, and when I flew here, I knew nothing more than Arigato and Konichiwa. Conversations with people were mostly awkward games of charades. In my 8 months here, I have studied, I have been immersed, and I have absorbed.  Now, I find myself having the recurring experience of meeting people that I have not seen since my first month here and shocking them with my ability to speak. “You can talk now!!!” It’s a strange feeling. I feel like an ape who has been given a speech device by a team of advanced scientists. The world of articulation, opening limitless doors of inquiry and human connection. I still enjoy playing charades.
